Institute of Banking Personnel Selection Exams Details

About IBPS
Institute of Banking Personnel Selection popularly known as IBPS is an organization which provides services to its clients in the area of personnel selection, recruitment and assessment etc. It has at its disposal a good team of qualified personnel - with expertise in psychology, psychometrics, educational measurement, human resource management, information technology and banking. IBPS is well known for its unique capability of developing Ability and Aptitude Test Batteries for mass level exams. IBPS with the help of its channel partners can organize online examinations for a large number of candidates in more than 200 cities across India simultaneously. 

IBPS provides its service to all Public Sector Banks, Regional Rural Banks, SBI, RBI, NABARD and SIDBI which are its regular member organizations. In addition to that many Public Sector Undertakings of Non-financial sectors, Government Departments, State owned companies and Corporations avail its services for selection, promotion and placement of their employees. 

Background
The journey of this Institute started way back in 1975 as Personnel Selection Services (PSS), a unit of National Institute of Bank Management (NIBM). The objective was to develop an unbiased and efficient system for recruitment, promotion and placement services to the Public Sector Banks. In 1984 this unit became an independent entity Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) at the behest of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Public Sector Banks. The first Chairman of its Governing Board was Dr. Manmohan Singh, the then Governor of RBI.

Evolution in Exam Pattern and Selection Process
IBPS, an autonomous body, has been authorized by IBA and has received a mandate from the 19 Public Sector Banks and other clients listed above to conduct the Common Written Examination. Until IBPS enters to the game all banks used to conduct their own tests for recruitments. The CWE for Probationary Officer/ Management Trainee, Clerks, Specialist Officers, RRBs (Office Assistants, Officers and Specialist Officers etc.) posts will be conducted every year by IBPS. 

The first notification for CWE PO-I from IBPS was released in 2011. Many changes took place in the pattern of PO Written Test till today as the exam then consists 5 tests with the total of 250 marks viz., Reasoning (50 questions-50 marks), English Language (50 questions-25 marks), Quantitative Aptitude (50 questions-50 marks), General Awareness (with special reference to Banking Industry: 50 questions-50 marks) and Computer Knowledge (50 questions-50 marks) along with a descriptive paper on English Composition (Essay, Precise, Letter Writing etc. for 25 marks). This is offline test and the duration was 2.30 hours or 150 minutes. The process continued as same above for the CWE-II also. 

In CWE-III the examination pattern changed as the written test become online. It consists 5 tests with the total of 200 marks viz., Reasoning (50 questions-50 marks), English Language (40 questions-40 marks), Quantitative Aptitude (50 questions-50 marks), General Awareness (with special reference to Banking Industry: 40 questions-40 marks) and Computer Knowledge (20 questions-20 marks) with the duration of only 2 hours. The descriptive test is removed in this notification. This pattern is not lasts for a long time but in CWE-IV. 

In 2015 IBPS made huge changes in PO/MT CWE-V and introduced two tier examination (prelims and mains) followed by an interview. The prelims exam is of 100 marks with the duration of 1 hour. Those who cleared or qualified in prelims will be eligible for mains. 

There are no changes made in CWE-Clerk written test for the past 5 years. The test is objective type and consists 5 sections viz., Reasoning (40 questions-40 marks), English Language (40 questions-40 marks), Numerical ability (40 questions-40 marks), General Awareness (with special reference to Banking Industry: 40 questions-40 marks) and Computer Knowledge (40 questions-40 marks) with the duration of only 2 hours. 

Many changes since 2011
  1. In first CWE PO/MT-I the test was for total 250 marks and later reduced to 200.
  2. Descriptive test was there in only first two notifications. It is removed from CWE PO/MT-III.
  3. In CWE PO/MT-I and II the duration for the test was 150 minutes. Later from CWE PO/MT-III, it is reduced to 120 minutes as questions cut to 200.
  4. CWE-I & II for PO and Clerk were offline mode. Since 2013 it is become online.
  5. In 2011 and 2012 all institutions used to conduct separate (individual) interviews for recruiting qualified candidates based on IBPS Score card.
  6. Since 2013 participated institutions conducting common interview to the candidates based on the score secured in IBPS written test.
  7. Earlier there was offline test for all written tests in IBPS. Since 2013 all tests become online.

At present Institute of Banking Personal Selection conducts online written exams for aspirants on behalf of participated organizations for the following types of positions. They are
