State Bank of India and its Associate Bank Exams Details

SBI History
The origin of the State Bank of India goes back to the nineteenth century with the establishment of the ‘Bank of Calcutta’ in Calcutta on 2 June 1806. Three years later on 2 January 1809, the bank was re-designed as the Bank of Bengal. It was the first joint-stock bank of British India sponsored by the Government of Bengal. Following the succession of Bank of Calcutta the other two banks named The Bank of Bombay (15 April 1840) and The Bank of Madras (1 July 1843) established under British rule. These three banks remained at the apex of modern banking in India till their amalgamation as the Imperial Bank of India on 27 January 1921.

The commercial banks of the country including the Imperial Bank of India had till then confined their operations to the urban sector and were not equipped to respond to the emergent needs of economic regeneration of the rural areas. In order, therefore, to serve the economy in general and the rural sector in particular, the All India Rural Credit Survey Committee recommended the creation of a state-partnered and state-sponsored bank by taking over the Imperial Bank of India, and integrating with it, the former state-owned or state-associate banks. An act was accordingly passed in Parliament in May 1955 and the State Bank of India was constituted on 1 July 1955. Later, the State Bank of India (Subsidiary Banks) Act was passed in 1959, enabling the State Bank of India to take over eight former State-associated banks as its subsidiaries (later named Associates).

Since 1955 SBI has been recruited lakhs of people through various notifications for different positions. There were many changes in SBI Clerk, PO and Specialist Officers written tests over the years.

The recruitment in public sector banks was standardized with the introduction of the Banking Service Recruitment Boards in 1978-79 by the government. The Narasimham Committee had urged in 1991 to allow banks to make their own officer recruitment more so where special skills were required and to allow clerical recruitment to continue to take place through the Board.

Evolution in Exam Pattern and Selection Process
Earlier in 2005 and before SBI Clerk written test was consisted 4 tests with the total of 225 questions viz., Reasoning ability (75 Marks), Quantitative aptitude (50 marks), General Awareness (50 marks) and English Language (50 marks). Later in 2006 Marketing Aptitude /Computer Knowledge subject was introduced. In new pattern, each test will be of 40 marks.

In 2011 the Probationary Officers written exam was consisted four tests viz., Reasoning ability (50 Marks), Quantitative Aptitude (50 marks), General Awareness (with special reference to banking industry - 50 marks) and English Language (50 marks) followed by a descriptive test (50 marks) and interview. But in 2012 SBI made changes in PO written test pattern by introducing “Data Analysis and Interpretation in the place of “Quantitative Aptitude” and changed the name of “General Awareness” to “General Awareness, Marketing and Computers”.

Meanwhile in 2015 notifications SBI made huge changes in written test pattern introducing two phases examination for Probationary Officers. The two phases are Prelims and Mains followed by an interview. Before 2013, SBI Exams were offline tests and now all exams are become online, as even descriptive test need to be written online by typing on computer key board.
